Puschmann’s text went through three editions shortly after its publication in the fall of 1872; the publisher marketed it with other music books, including Emil Naumann’s cultural history of music. It was clearly targeted at a broad audience of readers without specialized knowledge in psychiatry. Brahms most likely read or discussed this book with others; his friend Levi alluded to it in their correspondence, claiming, “And it would be so necessary that again one would stand up, who would fight certain people with note-heads, not with ‘psychiatric studies.’ ”19
